Tinubu’s aide, Temitope Ajayi, has clarified that his ‘capital punishment’ remark on NYSC member Ushie Rita Uguamaye referred to expulsion, not the death penalty.

Temitope Ajayi, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, has clarified his earlier statement regarding NYSC member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye.

Ajayi explained that his comment about “capital punishment” was misinterpreted and taken out of context.

According to him, his statement referred strictly to the by-laws and disciplinary protocols of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), not Nigeria’s legal system. Ajayi emphasized that his mention of “capital punishment” was not a reference to the death penalty on Uguamaye, but to the maximum disciplinary action under NYSC rules, which is expulsion.

Ajayi initially commented that Uguamaye, who criticized President Tinubu and called his leadership “terrible,” deserved capital punishment. This sparked controversy, as many interpreted his words as a call for extreme legal consequences. However, he has now urged the public to stop what he calls “misrepresentation and patent mischief” surrounding his remarks.

“It has become imperative to dispel the misrepresentation and patent mischief that has trailed my comment on a Facebook post,” Ajayi stated.

He further explained, “I suggested that flagrant and open abuse and disregard of NYSC by-laws and established protocol should attract the full NYSC disciplinary measures, particularly regarding a corps member’s recent display of imprudence.”

Ajayi stressed that the NYSC’s strict disciplinary measures are meant to uphold the integrity of the program. “It is trite to say the maximum punishment under the NYSC protocol is expulsion; nothing beyond the established norms and laws is suggested or remotely implied,” he added.

Speaking on the importance of the NYSC scheme, Ajayi described it as a historic and unifying national program that should not be undermined by indiscipline. “The NYSC scheme is a historic and treasured national programme that should not be sullied and ridiculed by indiscipline. It symbolises our triumph over division and consistent effort to forge a more potent and virile union,” he said.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to uphold values of respect and discipline. “Most importantly, we should abide by our old cherished values of dignity, discipline, and respect for one another as citizens,” Ajayi stated.
