Timi Dakolo Challenges Pastor Femi Lazarus’ Opposition To Paying Gospel Singers
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has criticized Pastor Lazarus Femi for his comments about gospel artistes who charge fees for church performances.
A viral video showed the pastor condemning gospel singers for turning church ministration into a paid performance, claiming they will soon fade away. He argued that those who worry about paying their crew lack faith, as God is the true provider of their needs.
Reacting to the video, Dakolo strongly disagreed, saying gospel artistes were not beggars and deserved proper compensation for their work. He stated that people should use the money to develop and fairly pay their church musicians instead of criticizing gospel singers.
He wrote, “My dear Christians, a quote or conversation can sound intelligent and deep yet be untrue. Just like everyone else, you deserve the very best things life has to offer. You should be paid for what you deserve. Studio sessions, production, and promotion cost a lot. You have a family to feed and rent to pay. You have more songs to release. We should stop attacking people’s work.”
He also emphasized that while music is spiritual, it is also an art that requires skill and effort. He continued, “If you can’t pay artists, then use your church choir members and pay them what you would have given the guest artist. This gaslighting must stop. Gospel ministers want good things too. They are not beggars. The best architects are hired to build big churches, and large sums are spent on promoting church programs.”
Dakolo urged people to respect musicians and their craft, stressing that it takes years of dedication to become an elite artist. He concluded, “Develop your church musicians and singers and pay them well. Stop belittling people’s work. Those making these statements wouldn’t fly economy or travel alone to save money for the ministry that invites them to preach. All this is said in love.”
