Alaafin Owoade Declares Official Title, With Roman Number Suffix
By Benjamin Abioye

The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, will officially be addressed as ‘His Imperial Majesty’.
This announcement was made in a statement released on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
Oba Owoade urged the public to strictly follow the correct wording of his official title.
The statement read: “This is to inform the general public that the proper manner of addressing the Alaafin for all activities and in the media is EXACTLY as follows:
HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY IKU BABA YEYE OBA ABIMBOLA AKEEM OWOADE I ALAAFIN OF OYO
The number after OWOADE is the Roman Numeral One (I), not the English Number One (1).
The public is enjoined to adhere strictly to use the wordings as exactly as stated above and without adding prefix or suffix to any of the names as stated above.”
Meanwhile besides the declaration by Alaafin Owoade of his official title, a legal dispute has emerged over Oba Owoade’s appointment. Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, one of the contenders for the Alaafin throne, has taken the matter to the Oyo State High Court, challenging the selection process.
The lawsuit, filed on February 12, 2025, seeks to overturn Owoade’s appointment. Gbadegesin claims that the selection violated the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000 and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961.
His lawyer, Kunle Sobaloju (SAN), argued that Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval of Owoade’s appointment within five days was “unlawful, unconstitutional, invalid, null, and void.”
Gbadegesin further stated that the Oyomesi (kingmakers) had already chosen him as the rightful candidate. He is now asking the court to recognize his nomination as valid.
He also alleged that the governor’s decision did not follow due process in several important aspects.
