Reps Rivers Fubara Suspension

The House of Representatives has erupted in a heated exchange as lawmakers prepare to debate President Tinubu’s emergency declaration in Rivers State.

A tense atmosphere engulfed the House of Representatives as lawmakers clashed ahead of the debate on the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State.

The heated exchange began even before the plenary session commenced, signaling deep divisions among members of the green chamber.

The political turmoil in Rivers took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state. The move followed months of intense crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his political rivals. Alongside the emergency declaration, Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire state assembly. In their place, he appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, as the new administrator of the state.

Defending the president’s decision, Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House of Representatives, stated that Tinubu had consulted key figures in the National Assembly before making the announcement. Among those present at the discussions were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. Also in attendance were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and heads of intelligence agencies.

Rotimi further confirmed that Tinubu’s official letter seeking legislative approval for the emergency rule had been transmitted to the House and was scheduled for presentation during Wednesday’s plenary.

With the house now in session, the stage is set for what is expected to be a heated debate over the legality and necessity of the emergency rule. As tensions run high, all eyes are on the lawmakers to see how they will navigate the unfolding political crisis in Rivers State.
