Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, calling it unconstitutional and a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.

In a social media post on Wednesday night, El-Rufai argued that the Nigerian Constitution does not grant the President the power to remove elected state officials as President Tinubu did in Rivers State.

While acknowledging the political unrest in Rivers State, he insisted that legal measures should have been taken instead of dismantling democratic institutions.

He pointed out that if security concerns warranted federal intervention, a state of emergency could have been declared without removing elected leaders. He also reminded Tinubu of his past opposition to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s state of emergency in the North-East, noting that Jonathan never suspended any governor despite the crisis at the time.

Citing a Supreme Court ruling that deems such suspensions illegal, El-Rufai warned that the decision could push Nigeria into a political crisis similar to the Western Region turmoil of 1962, which led to widespread unrest.

He urged Nigerians to speak out against what he described as a clear violation of the law and called on the Federal Government to reverse its decision before it further erodes democracy.
