Court INEC Natasha Recall

The Federal High Court in Lokoja has issued an interim injunction stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from receiving petitions aimed at recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Efforts to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan gained momentum on Thursday as more groups in Kogi Central declared their support for the process. However, some Ebira indigenes dismissed claims that the recall was being influenced by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s political opponents through financial inducements.

The court’s ruling, delivered on Thursday, also restricts INEC staff, agents, or representatives from accepting petitions containing fraudulent signatures or conducting any referendum until the motion on notice is determined.

According to the court order, which was released to the public on Friday morning, the injunction was granted after an ex-parte application supported by an affidavit citing extreme urgency. The court documents were signed by Anebe Jacob Ogirima on behalf of himself and four other registered voters from Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The application was presented by legal counsel Smart Nwachimere, Esq., of West-Idahosa, SAN & Co. The case has been adjourned to May 6, 2025, for further proceedings and a report on the service of court orders.

Reacting to the ruling, a pressure group known as Action Collective praised the judiciary for intervening in the matter. The group’s coordinator, Dr. Onimisi Ibrahim, stated that the order would help expose the actions of those allegedly orchestrating an unlawful attempt to recall the senator.
