The Legislative Arm of Bekwarra Local Government Area in Cross River State has impeached its council chairman, Hon. Theresa Ushie, over allegations of misconduct and abuse of power.

The impeachment, led by Council Leader Hon. Thompson Inah, was backed by nine out of ten councillors, who accused Ushie of poor leadership that allegedly stifled development and contradicted Governor Prince Bassey Otu’s “People First” agenda.

Among the accusations leveled against Ushie were a lack of transparency in revenue management, misuse of funds, and secretive handling of government projects. Councillors also claimed they were denied proper office spaces and alleged that salaries were being paid through an inaccessible bank.

Additionally, the embattled chairman was accused of mishandling Christmas palliatives meant for residents and engaging in confrontations involving her family members, further escalating tensions within the council.

After several failed attempts to resolve the crisis internally, the councillors invoked the Cross River State Local Government Law to remove Ushie from office. A formal notification has been sent to Governor Bassey Otu and Acting Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey regarding the decision.

In response to the political turmoil, the state government has scheduled an emergency meeting for March 24, 2025, to address the leadership crisis. Acting Governor Odey has directed that the council maintain its pre-crisis conditions until a resolution is reached.

As of now, Hon. Theresa Ushie—often referred to as the Queen of Bekwarra Nation—has yet to publicly react to her impeachment.
