IGP Deploys More Police To Rivers After State Of Emergency
By Benjamin Abioye

The IGP has ordered the deployment of more police officers to Rivers State to boost security after the President declared a state of emergency.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an immediate increase in police personnel and resources in Rivers State.
This follows the State of Emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.
The additional officers are being deployed to enhance security, protect lives and property, and secure important infrastructure throughout the state.
A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday, March 20, confirmed that the operation is a joint effort with the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
The statement explained: “On 18th March 2025, a state of emergency was declared in Rivers State by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Before this declaration, the Nigeria Police Force had been closely monitoring threats to public order, gathering intelligence, and sharing it with other security agencies.
“The events leading up to this decision were a direct result of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State over the past 22 months. The situation had reached a critical point, requiring urgent intervention to prevent a total breakdown of law and order, which could have serious consequences for national security.
“In response, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the swift deployment of additional personnel and resources to the state. This operation, carried out in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, aims to strengthen security, safeguard lives and property, and ensure the protection of critical infrastructure.”
The statement also emphasized that those who feel aggrieved have the right to seek legal redress through proper judicial channels. It warned against unlawful protests, gatherings, or any activities that could disrupt public peace, stating that such actions would be met with strict enforcement of the law.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to maintaining law and order. Citizens are advised to stay law-abiding, follow all legal directives, and go about their daily activities without fear. The public is also encouraged to report any suspicious activities that may pose a threat to security.”
The statement concluded with a warning to criminal elements, stating: “Individuals or groups planning to cause unrest should stay away from Rivers State. Security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to peace and stability.”
