Rivers State Sole Administrator Releases Withheld Local Government Funds
By Gideon Ayeni

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has announced the release of previously withheld local government funds, assuring workers that their salaries will now be paid without delay.
Ibas made this known during a meeting with local government administrators in Port Harcourt, where he acknowledged the financial hardship faced by employees due to unpaid wages. “I feel the pain of the workers,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to addressing their concerns.
Highlighting the need for financial accountability, Ibas assured that public funds would be closely monitored to prevent mismanagement. He stressed that transparency remains a top priority under his leadership.
Besides the issue of the local government funds, the Rivers State Sole Administrator also spoke on security as he called for stronger collaboration between traditional rulers and security agencies to maintain peace across the state. “You must take the lead in ensuring security within your domains,” he urged local government officials.
Reacting to the development, the President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Clifford Paul, commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas, describing him as a competent leader. Paul, who also serves as the Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, urged Ibas to prioritize workers’ welfare, noting that local government employees are currently owed two months’ salaries.
The release of funds is expected to bring much-needed relief to workers, as many had struggled to meet their financial obligations due to the prolonged delay in payments.
