The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) has distanced itself from President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that it will not take a stance on the matter.

In a statement released on Saturday, NGF Director General Abdulateef Shittu emphasized that the forum remains a non-partisan body committed to fostering unified policies and economic development across Nigeria.

“Our role as a forum is to prioritize governance and sustainable growth, not to engage in politically divisive matters. Taking a stance on the Rivers crisis could compromise the unity of the forum, especially given past political conflicts that nearly fractured our ranks,” Shittu explained.

Rivers State has been embroiled in a political crisis for nearly two years, fueled by a bitter power struggle between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Governor Sim Fubara.

In response to escalating tensions, President Tinubu imposed emergency rule on Tuesday, suspending:

Governor Sim Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu

As part of the emergency measures, Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator of Rivers State.

Despite mounting concerns, the NGF has urged the public and media to exercise patience, assuring that appropriate crisis management measures will be put in place.

While the forum refrains from intervening in political disputes, it reaffirmed its dedication to critical governance issues, including:

Wage policies, Taxation reforms, Education improvement, Healthcare development.

As reactions to Tinubu’s emergency rule continue to divide opinions, all eyes remain on the evolving political landscape in Rivers State.
