The Socialist Workers League (SWL) has strongly opposed the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as a form of martial law and calling for its immediate reversal.

In a statement signed by National Chairperson Jamiu Towolawi and National Secretary Amara Nwosu, the group criticized the move, highlighting that it has led to the suspension of elected public officials, including the governor and lawmakers.

The SWL argued that neither Governor Siminalayi Fubara nor Minister Nyesom Wike, who allegedly controls the state legislature by proxy, represents the interests of Rivers State’s working-class people and youth. The organization accused both politicians of prioritizing control over the state’s oil resources, adding that Tinubu’s support for Wike is linked to the political influence he wielded in the 2023 presidential elections and future strategic interests in 2027.

Raising concerns about the impact of the crisis on the people, the SWL lamented that resources meant for public education and healthcare were diverted into the power struggle between the ruling class factions in Rivers State. The organization noted widespread opposition to the state of emergency from civil society organizations and trade unions, condemning the National Assembly for acting as a “rubber stamp” to executive overreach.

Declaring “Enough is enough,” the SWL urged Rivers State residents to take their fate into their own hands, mobilize, and organize to push back against what it described as anti-democratic actions. The statement called on the people to move beyond condemnation and actively resist the emergency rule imposed on the state.
