Nigerian Singer Police Custody

Nigerian singer Paul Obukowho’s tragic death in police custody has sparked outrage, with family and friends demanding justice while authorities remain silent.

A rising Nigerian singer, Paul Obukowho, has reportedly died while in police custody in Delta State. The 24-year-old was allegedly tortured to death by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) under the Delta State Police Command in Asaba.

According to a police source, the incident began when Paul’s friend, Prosper Odili, was randomly arrested by RRS operatives on Wednesday morning around 8:00 AM. Prosper was walking along Redeemed Road, Okpanam, when the police stopped him. He was taken to his house for a search, and after finding nothing illegal, the police still detained him at their headquarters in Asaba.

Later that day, Paul went to the RRS office to ask why his friend had been arrested and to see if he could secure his release. However, instead of getting answers, Paul was also detained. He was handcuffed on both his hands and legs and thrown into a cell, where he was allegedly subjected to severe torture.

A police source explained, “Prosper Odili was actually walking with a friend when RRS officers from the police headquarters in Asaba arrested them unjustly. They took both men to their homes to search, but after finding nothing incriminating, they released one of them and detained Prosper.”

The source continued, “Paul went to the RRS office to inquire about Prosper’s arrest and to try and bail him out. But shockingly, as soon as he got there, he was detained, handcuffed on both hands and legs, and thrown into a cell with severe torture.”

By Thursday night, Paul’s condition worsened. He collapsed in the cell due to injuries from the alleged torture. Officers rushed him to the police clinic, but his condition was beyond their capacity. He was then referred to the Specialist Hospital in Asaba and later transferred to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Asaba. Sadly, Paul succumbed to his injuries and passed away early Saturday morning at about 4:00 AM.

The source added, “Finally, he was referred to the Federal Medical Center, but unfortunately, he couldn’t survive the pain and wounds from the police torture. He died at about 4:00 AM on Saturday. And immediately after his death, the RRS officers who brought him to the hospital ran away from the premises.”

As of now, Paul’s body is reportedly still at the FMC Asaba. His family and friends are demanding justice, while the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, has not yet issued any statement on the incident.
