President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has disclosed that he once playfully threatened to sack the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, due to political considerations.

Tinubu made this revelation on Sunday while hosting Wike and other top government officials at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

Commending Wike’s innovative approach to managing the FCT, Tinubu recalled an instance when the minister sought an exemption from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy to enable more flexible financial management for executing projects.

The TSA, a policy introduced to centralize public funds under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), ensures accountability and curbs revenue leakages. However, Wike reportedly urged the President to remove the FCT from the policy to accelerate developmental projects.

“He came up with a lot of good ideas,” Tinubu recounted. “I remember the day he came to me and said, ‘Please, take us out of this problem of TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more.’ I said, ‘OK, show me what you’re about to do,’ and he presented himself.”

Tinubu admitted injecting a political dimension into the discussion, teasing Wike about his party affiliation.

“I asked him, ‘Will this give me any opportunity for my party to win elections?’ I know where you are coming from—your own party or mine. But if this thing benefits you too much, you might lose your job,’” the President said.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor and prominent figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stirred controversy when he joined Tinubu’s cabinet in 2023, fueling speculations about his political alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite his PDP roots, Wike has been a key figure in Tinubu’s administration, leading to ongoing debates about his future political stance.
