What Declining Morale Means For Nigerian Army
By Benjamin Abioye

The concerns regarding the welfare and treatment of Nigerian soldiers, particularly those deployed in conflict zones like Sambisa, have not only affected the morale of those already enlisted but also shaped the perceptions of potential recruits. Unlike before, when many young Nigerians saw joining the military as a noble career choice and an opportunity to serve their country, the current state of the army has caused a significant shift in this mindset.
Welfare Issues and the Diminishing Appeal to Join
The reported inadequate feeding conditions, lack of proper care for injured soldiers, and subpar living arrangements have led to a general disillusionment among both current personnel and potential recruits. Soldiers who risk their lives are now complaining about the lack of compensation, proper healthcare, and even basic necessities like food and water. These ongoing issues have made many reconsider joining the military, with young Nigerians opting for alternative career paths or opportunities outside the army.
In addition to the feeding and welfare challenges, the delayed and inadequate compensation for wounded soldiers further tarnishes the reputation of the army. Many young people are now questioning the benefits of joining an institution that offers limited support to those who risk their lives in battle. The army, once seen as a prestigious institution, now struggles to attract recruits who are increasingly aware of these shortcomings.
From Aspiration to Desperation: The Army’s Struggle to Recruit
The appeal of joining the Nigerian Army in the past was driven by the sense of national pride, stability, and the opportunity to serve the country. However, this perception has drastically changed in recent years due to the widespread dissatisfaction within the military ranks. Many potential recruits, who once saw the army as a way to achieve personal and professional growth, are now hesitant to enlist due to the deteriorating conditions within the force.
Additionally, the shift towards social media platforms like TikTok, where soldiers seek alternative sources of income, highlights the growing divide between the military’s expectations and the realities of life within its ranks. This trend underscores the financial instability that many soldiers face and reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the compensation offered to them.
A Growing Concern for National Security
The reluctance to join the military, coupled with a demoralized force, poses a significant challenge to Nigeria’s security efforts. Inadequate resources and poor treatment of soldiers may lead to a weakened defense force, leaving the country more vulnerable to insurgencies, terrorism, and other criminal activities. As the number of recruits dwindles, the impact on national security could be profound, as a disenchanted military is less likely to perform optimally in the face of security challenges.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Army’s failure to adequately address the welfare of its soldiers, from feeding conditions to post-service care, is not only a serious concern for current personnel but also for those who might otherwise consider joining the force. Without substantial reforms to improve the conditions within the military, it will be increasingly difficult to recruit new soldiers, which may ultimately affect the country’s ability to maintain internal security. The military’s current trajectory raises important questions about its future and the potential consequences for national defense.
