The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja is set to deliver its long-awaited judgment today.

The case was filed by Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State.

The three-member panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, had reserved its verdict on March 3, 2025, after both parties had presented their final written addresses. This marked an important step toward resolving the case, which has been highly contested.

Ighodalo and the PDP are challenging the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). They claim that the election was full of irregularities and did not follow the rules set by the Electoral Act, 2022. The petitioners argue that these violations should lead to the election result being canceled.

To back up their claims, the PDP presented 19 witnesses and submitted several documents during the hearings. In response, the APC’s legal team called four witnesses to defend the election results. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which oversaw the election, did not present any witnesses during the tribunal proceedings.

The judgment is expected to have major political consequences in Edo State. It will decide whether Governor Okpebholo’s election will be upheld or declared invalid.
