Renowned Hollywood actor Val Kilmer, celebrated for his iconic roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and The Doors, has passed away at the age of 65.

According to The New York Times, Kilmer succumbed to complications from pneumonia. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed his passing, noting that while he had battled throat cancer since 2014, he later recovered.

Kilmer’s career spanned decades, with his breakthrough coming in 1986 when he played Iceman in Top Gun, starring alongside Tom Cruise’s Maverick. He became one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, delivering memorable performances in Heat with Al Pacino and The Doors, where he embodied rock legend Jim Morrison. His portrayal of Batman in Batman Forever (1995) cemented his status as a pop culture icon, placing him in the esteemed lineup of actors who have donned the cape and cowl.

Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959, he made history as the youngest student ever admitted to Juilliard’s drama department. Though he initially pursued serious acting roles, Hollywood’s blockbuster machine frequently drew him into high-profile productions. Despite reports of on-set tensions, those who worked with him often praised his dedication and passion for the craft.

After a period of starring in lesser-known films, Kilmer sought to reinvent himself with a stage show about Mark Twain. However, his plans were derailed by his cancer diagnosis, a battle he later documented in the critically acclaimed 2021 film Val, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The documentary offered a rare glimpse into his rise to fame, personal struggles, and enduring legacy.

In 2022, Kilmer made a poignant return to the big screen in Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his beloved role as Iceman. His real-life health struggles were seamlessly woven into the character’s storyline, providing an emotional reunion with Tom Cruise’s Maverick.

Reflecting on his life, Kilmer once wrote: “For more than half a century, I have been honing my art—whether in literature, movies, poetry, painting, or music. I have truly lived a magical life.”

He is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
