Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Mele Kyari as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing it as the smartest move yet by the president.

In a post on his X handle, Fayose welcomed the leadership change, expressing optimism that it would bring positive reforms to the NNPCL and improve the lives of Nigerians.

“The removal of the NNPCL CEO, Mele Kyari, is a welcome development. It is the smartest move ever by President Tinubu. It is hoped that this will bring a better lease of life to the NNPCL in particular and Nigerians in general. This same courage to wield the big stick should also be extended to other systems as rotten as the NNPCL,” Fayose wrote.

The Fayose’s comments come after Tinubu appointed Bayo Ojulari as Kyari’s replacement, sparking mixed reactions across the country.

Meanwhile, TVC presenter Rufai Oseni has opposed Ojulari’s appointment, criticizing what he sees as a pattern of Yoruba dominance in key government positions.

Taking to his X handle, Oseni wrote: “Another Yoruba line-up at NNPC. I am not in support of this ooo. There are other competent Nigerians. It doesn’t have to be Yoruba always!”

His remarks have stirred debate on social media, with some agreeing that federal appointments should reflect Nigeria’s diversity, while others accused him of tribal bias.

With the NNPCL leadership now under Ojulari, attention shifts to how the new GCEO will navigate Nigeria’s energy sector challenges and implement much-needed reforms.
