Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has strongly rejected former Senator Elisha Abbo’s recent criticism of his leadership, calling the accusations “baseless” and part of “media theatrics.”

Abbo, during an interview on April 2, 2025, claimed that Akpabio was running the Senate like a personal empire, targeting senators who disagreed with him.

In a statement issued by Akpabio’s Special Adviser on Media, Rt. Hon Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President denied Abbo’s allegations. He clarified that Abbo’s claims were part of a continuing pattern of “spurious and malicious” remarks following his removal from the Senate. Akpabio further stated that the legal process that led to Abbo’s removal was carried out according to the law, without any political interference.

The statement also reminded the public that Abbo had previously made similar accusations in 2023, only to retract them, admitting that his claims were “premature and based on the available information at the time.” Akpabio pointed out that Abbo had even acknowledged in a past conversation that he had no involvement in the judicial process surrounding his removal from the Senate, making his current accusations even more confusing.

“To clarify, the Court of Appeal ruled that Mr. Abbo’s presence in the Senate was a mistake, as he was not properly elected as the Senator for Adamawa North,” the statement read. It emphasized that the court’s decision was in line with the law and the Constitution, and Akpabio, a trained lawyer and democrat, has great respect for the judiciary and would never interfere in its processes.

The statement also addressed Abbo’s claims about unpaid benefits, including salaries, allowances, and an official vehicle. Akpabio explained that the Senate President only approves payments that have been vetted by the appropriate administrative units. If Abbo’s claims did not reach the Senate President, it was because they failed to meet lawful standards, not due to any personal vendetta.

Furthermore, the statement reminded the public of the 2019 incident when Abbo was caught on video assaulting a female citizen, for which he was ordered by a court to pay N50 million in damages. Akpabio’s office criticized Abbo for using media theatrics to deflect attention from his legal and political failures, portraying him as desperate to stay politically relevant.

The statement concluded by urging Abbo to reflect on his actions and respect the rule of law. Akpabio remains focused on nation-building and the strengthening of democratic institutions, particularly the independence of the judiciary. He called on Abbo to take responsibility for his past actions and work towards regaining the trust of his constituents.
