The leadership crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) has taken a fresh twist as the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, nullified a previous judgment by the Court of Appeal in Abuja which had recognised Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman.

Delivering a unanimous verdict, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal acted beyond its jurisdiction by meddling in the internal affairs of a political party. According to the Supreme Court, leadership tussles within political parties are not justiciable matters and must be resolved internally without judicial interference.

The ruling followed an appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and another LP member, who had challenged the appellate court’s earlier decision in favour of Abure. The Supreme Court upheld their arguments, declaring that the Appeal Court erred in its judgment.

Additionally, the apex court dismissed a counter-appeal by Abure’s camp, describing it as lacking merit and substance.

With this new development, the Labour Party’s leadership crisis remains unresolved and now squarely falls back on the party’s internal mechanisms.
