Labour Party Clarifies Abure’s Position After Supreme Court Judgment
By Gideon Ayeni

Amid widespread confusion, Labour Party has clarified that Julius Abure remains its National Chairman following a Supreme Court judgment that many initially misinterpreted.
The clarification came after a ruling by a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, which dismissed an appeal seeking to challenge Abure’s leadership. The apex court stated unequivocally that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to determine who should lead a political party.
According to the justices, leadership matters within political parties are strictly internal affairs and fall outside the purview of the judiciary.
The appeal was filed by former senator Nenadi Usman and another party member. The Supreme Court ruled that such internal disputes are not for the courts to resolve, thereby reinforcing the autonomy of political parties in managing their internal structures.
Reacting to the ruling, Labour Party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh issued a statement reaffirming Abure’s leadership. He stressed that the judgment does not remove Abure from office but rather upholds the party’s constitutional right to determine its own leadership without interference.
“The Supreme Court has only reiterated what we already know—that the choice of who leads a political party rests with its members, not the courts,” Ifoh stated pushing forward the claim that Abure remained chairman.
With this ruling, the Labour Party aims to put an end to the leadership tussle and reaffirm unity within its ranks, insisting that Julius Abure remains the duly recognized National Chairman.
