Outrage As MTN Hikes Data Prices
By Gideon Ayeni

Nigerians have taken to social media to express frustration over the sudden spike in data subscription prices by telecommunication companies, amid worsening economic challenges in the country.
The development, which many described as “insensitive” and “unbearable,” has created criticism from internet users, bloggers, and digital professionals who rely heavily on data to carry out their daily activities.
A recent check by GWG.ng showed that data bundles under the MTN ‘Data 4Me’ previously priced between ₦5,000 and ₦7,000 have now jumped to as high as ₦11,000 — a sharp increase that has left many Nigerians struggling to stay connected.

“Data is life in this country. With all the stress and hardship, being online is one of the few ways to keep sane. But now, even that is being taken from us,” one netizen lamented.
Another frustrated user wrote:
“Woke up this morning and saw that data prices have increased again. I’m writing to express my deep concern. This hike is becoming unbearable. Something must be done immediately.”
Social media platforms have been flooded with similar reactions, with many calling on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the federal government to intervene and regulate data costs.
As inflation continues to bite and the cost of living soars, Nigerians say internet access — once a basic digital right — is fast becoming a luxury only few can afford.
