27 Dead As Nightclub Roof Collapses On Governor, Party Goers
By Gideon Ayeni

At least 27 people, including a provincial governor, have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a nightclub roof in the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The devastating incident occurred at the popular Jet Set nightclub, located near the coast, causing panic and a massive emergency response. Authorities say over 130 people sustained various degrees of injuries, while many others remain trapped under the rubble.
Juan Manuel Méndez, head of the country’s Emergency Operations Centre, said rescue crews are working around the clock to locate and retrieve those still believed to be beneath the debris. However, he did not confirm how many people were inside the building at the time of the collapse.
President Luis Abinader took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his condolences and confirmed that Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province in the north, was among the victims.
“We deeply regret the tragedy. Our prayers are with the affected families,” President Abinader wrote, assuring the public that authorities are doing everything possible to aid victims and their loved ones.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation as emergency services continue their efforts to rescue and recover those impacted by the catastrophe.
