New Alarm On Human Trafficking Disguised As Job Offers

Investigative journalist and human rights advocate, David Hundeyin, has issued a strong warning to Nigerians about the growing trend of human trafficking disguised as job offers across West Africa.

In a public service announcement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Hundeyin cautioned Nigerians—especially the youth—against accepting job offers to relocate to countries like Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, or others in the region under the promise of employment or “hustle” opportunities.

He stated emphatically that such offers are often elaborate traps laid by human traffickers.

“There is no job anywhere in West Africa,” Hundeyin warned. “In fact, you’re more likely to find a job in Nigeria than in any of those places.”

According to him, many Nigerians—both male and female—are being lured across borders with false promises only to end up in horrific situations. For women, he revealed, there’s a “99% chance” of being forced into sex work, while men often find themselves imprisoned in scam syndicates, where they are coerced to defraud others or even trick people back in Nigeria into falling into the same trap.

He also exposed lesser-known but equally disturbing fates for some victims, including being sold into slavery in illegal gold mining operations (known as “Galamsey”) or to fishermen on Lake Volta in Ghana—where children are reportedly subjected to years of bonded labor.

“Many of you have been brainwashed into believing that everywhere outside Nigeria is flowing with honey and gold dust,” Hundeyin wrote, “but your ‘star’ does not reside outside the country.”

While expressing doubt that his message would reach most of those at risk, he said he hoped that “even if it convinces 0.1% of potential victims to sit their asses at home and find something to do,” the warning would have served its purpose.

His comments come amid growing reports of West African trafficking networks targeting vulnerable Nigerians in search of better opportunities abroad.

Meanwhile, authorities are yet to respond to Hundeyin’s claims.
