Renowned Nigerian entrepreneur and financial icon, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, has passed away at the age of 85.

His death was confirmed in an official statement released by the Dozie family on Tuesday, April 9. According to his son, Uzoma Dozie, the respected business mogul died peacefully in the early hours of Monday, April 8, 2025.

“With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, on 8th April 2025,” Uzoma stated.

“He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith. His life was marked by service – to God, his family, and country.”

The family added that he is survived by his wife, Chinyere, children, grandchildren, and many others whose lives he touched through his legacy of excellence and humility.

A Life of Impact and Innovation

Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Pascal Dozie began his educational journey at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku. He later travelled to the United Kingdom, where he earned a degree in Economics from the London School of Economics, followed by a Master’s in Administrative Science from City University, London.

After his studies, Dozie returned to Nigeria and quickly rose through the ranks of the private sector, earning a reputation as one of the country’s most respected financial experts.

In 1990, he founded Diamond Bank Plc, which went on to become one of Nigeria’s most innovative and respected financial institutions. Under his leadership, the bank grew steadily before merging with Access Bank in 2019. He later handed over the reins of the bank to his son, Uzoma Dozie.

Beyond banking, Dozie made significant contributions to Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. He was the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, playing a pivotal role in the company’s successful entry into the Nigerian market.

National Recognition and Service

For his immense contributions to Nigeria’s economic development, Dozie was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of the nation’s highest honours.

He was also a vocal advocate for entrepreneurship and private sector development, mentoring young business leaders and promoting ethical leadership in finance.

A Legacy That Endures

Pascal Dozie was widely admired not only for his business achievements but also for his humility, integrity, and deep commitment to national progress. His influence transcended banking and telecommunications, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence and service.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, many remember him as a man whose vision, wisdom, and leadership helped shape modern Nigeria.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Chinyere, his children — including Uzoma, a leading figure in the banking and tech sectors — and several grandchildren.
