A female commercial bus driver in Lagos has cried out for justice after a passenger allegedly attacked her while trying to steal her bus battery.
A female commercial bus driver in Lagos has cried out for justice after she was allegedly assaulted by a male passenger in broad daylight.
The incident, which has since sparked outrage across social media, took place around the Oriental Hotel area, Under Bridge, where the woman picked up the said passenger who claimed he was heading to Law School.
According to the driver, who chose not to reveal her name, trouble started when she noticed the man attempting to steal her bus battery. Upon confronting him, the man reportedly turned violent and began assaulting her. Determined not to let him escape, the woman held onto him tightly, leading to a public scene where both were seen dragging each other’s clothes — the man pulling her skirt while she held onto his shorts.
In the video circulating online, the woman was seen crying bitterly, calling on human rights organizations, the Lagos State Government, and the NURTW (National Union of Road Transport Workers) to come to her aid. She lamented the challenges women face working in male-dominated jobs like commercial driving, only to face violence and harassment.
The incident has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians online, with many expressing anger, frustration, and disappointment over the assault.
Some users, like Dr. Kalu (@DrKalu_PhD), lamented that such an incident would not have happened in Eastern Nigeria without dire consequences for the attacker. Others like Flying Scholar (@EuchariaUrantaO) called the situation disturbing and urged the Lagos State Government to take immediate action to protect drivers, especially women.
@Jerolagu called on Governor Sanwo-Olu (@jidesanwoolu), the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (@Lamataonline), and the police (@PoliceNG) to ensure the attacker faces justice.
Meanwhile, some users expressed frustration over the growing presence of street thugs in Lagos, blaming the situation on political leaders who allegedly empower such individuals for personal or electoral gain. For instance, @kentiz01 remarked, “Aswear Lagos na real yeye place to stay .. Imagine thugs taking over Lagos .. .”
A few users like Edwin (@MadukaChris2) and Adinma (@ObiadinmaC) expressed their desire to locate the woman so they could reward her bravery.
However, not all comments were supportive. Some insensitive reactions criticized the woman for working as a bus driver, questioning why she did not choose an easier job. These comments were widely condemned by other users who praised the woman for her hard work and resilience.
Overall, the incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of commercial drivers in Lagos, the growing menace of street violence, and the urgent need for government intervention to protect vulnerable citizens.
Many Nigerians are now demanding swift justice for the female driver, with calls for the Lagos State Government and the police to arrest and prosecute the attacker without delay.
