NRC Suspends Warri-Itakpe Train Services
By Benjamin Abioye

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that it will suspend train services on the Warri-Itakpe route for 72 hours.
This decision was made due to the several engine failures last Tuesday that disrupted the service leading to passengers being forced to trek long distances from a broken down train.
During this 72-hour suspension, NRC technicians will conduct a thorough audit to address the technical issues and ensure the restoration of safe and reliable services. The corporation has also stated that passengers with tickets for the affected trains will be given the option of either a full refund or revalidation for future travel, depending on their preference.
The NRC confirmed that the service disruption occurred on Tuesday, April 9, 2025, when multiple engine failures caused issues on the Warri-Itakpe rail line. The disruption started around 1:38 PM, impacting both the 8:00 AM train from Warri and the 2:00 PM train from Itakpe.
Emergency recovery protocols were immediately activated, but they were delayed due to additional engine failures. NRC quickly arranged for the safe evacuation of all passengers by road transport, ensuring adequate security throughout the process. Passengers were escorted to waiting vehicles about 500 meters from the affected train, though some chose to make their own arrangements due to the delay.
As a result of these issues, NRC has decided to halt services on the Warri-Itakpe route for 72 hours to resolve the problems and ensure a return to normal operations. All passengers affected by the disruption will have the option to either receive a full refund or revalidate their tickets for future travel.
