Nkem Owoh Brother Killed Buhari Regime

Veteran actor Nkem Owoh has described the execution of his brother by the military government of Muhammadu Buhari as the most painful experience of his life.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, has shared how the death of his elder brother, Bartholomew Owoh, remains one of the most painful experiences of his life.

His brother was one of three young men executed by firing squad in 1985 during the military government of General Muhammadu Buhari.

Bartholomew Owoh was killed alongside Lawal Ojuolape and Bernard Ogedengbe. They were convicted of drug-related offences. However, at the time they committed the offences, the death penalty was not applicable. The military government introduced a new decree later and applied it to their case, leading to their execution.

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘The Interview’, Nkem Owoh recalled the pain and anger he felt when the incident happened. He said, “I was working with the Anambra Television that time, and I was so furious that I was shedding tears along the corridors.”

He explained that what hurt him the most was that the military government changed the law and backdated it to punish people for offences committed before the law existed. He said, “In fact, the thing that touched me most is that they had to shift the effective date of that decree. You know, during the military era, they can just get out one decree and the next minute, it’s in operation.”

Expressing his frustration over the unfairness of the action, he added, “So for them to backdate it to involve or include people who did not commit the offence within their own regime, but years back, I was very bitter.”

Nkem Owoh further questioned the moral justification behind such a decision. He asked, “Why would it be shifted back to include people who didn’t commit the offence before the decree?”
