Fire Guts 12 Shops In Popular Ibadan Market
By Gideon Ayeni

A late-night fire outbreak on Thursday wreaked havoc at the Agodi Mayegun Cement Store Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying property worth millions of naira and reducing at least 12 shops to ashes.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident at Agodi Mayegun Cement Store Market in a statement issued on Friday, April 11, 2025. According to Akinyinka, the fire service received a distress call from a resident identified as Mr. Young, prompting an immediate response from firefighters.
“Our team responded swiftly to the emergency and was able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the market,” Akinyinka said.
He noted that despite the intensity of the blaze, the efforts of the firefighters saved property valued in the billions from being consumed and spreading further to affect the whole of the market.
Preliminary investigations by the fire service indicate that the inferno was triggered by a power surge. The fire reportedly burned for over three hours before it was fully contained.
Traders in Agodi Mayegun Cement Store Market and residents in the area have begun counting their losses, as the affected shops were said to be stocked with building materials and other goods.
