How News Of Christian Chukwu’s Death Broke
By Benjamin Abioye

Christian Chukwu, a former captain and head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has died at the age of 74.
He reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday, though the exact details of his death were not immediately clear.
The sad news was confirmed by his close friend and former teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami. Odegbami, who played alongside Chukwu during Nigeria’s victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, expressed his sorrow. “I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, has passed on,” he said. “Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven and console his family.”
Chukwu, born on January 4, 1951, had a remarkable football career. He was a star with Rangers International, where he served as captain and helped the team win many local trophies. In 1977, he led the team to a major continental victory in the African Cup Winners Cup.
He made history as the first Nigerian captain to lift the African Nations Cup, following a 3–0 win against Algeria in the 1980 final held in Lagos. Later, he also played a vital role as assistant coach to Clemens Westerhof during Nigeria’s successful 1994 AFCON win and their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup in the USA that same year.
