Peter Obi has expressed support for the boy who stood in front of his convoy during the 2023 campaign, a moment that went viral and later led to the boy’s arrest.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has shown support for Qudir Yusuf Alabi, a young boy currently held at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Lagos.

Qudir gained public attention during the 2023 election season when he stood in front of Obi’s campaign convoy, a moment that went viral.

It was made known on Friday that a team representing Peter Obi visited Qudir in prison. They also met with his mother and sister. The visit was part of Obi’s ongoing support for the boy and his family.

A statement from the movement said, “His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, through the Obidient Movement, visited Qudir Yusuf Alabi at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Apapa, Lagos. During the visit, he connected with Qudir’s mother and sister, standing in solidarity with the family and expressing unwavering support during this difficult time.”

Earlier, Obi had asked a Nigerian lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, to get involved in the case and help secure Qudir’s release. Reports suggest that Qudir was returning from work when he was taken by some people in his neighborhood and handed over to the police. They accused him of theft and fighting in the streets. However, some eyewitnesses and supporters believe the accusations are not true.

Speaking on the matter, Obi made a post on 𝕏 on April 8, 2025. He said, “I appeal to the police and other agents of the government to continuously operate within the law and the rules and stop the weaponizing of citizens.”
