U.S. Court Orders Release Of Files On Tinubu Probe
By Benjamin Abioye

A U.S. federal court has directed several American law enforcement agencies to release previously classified documents concerning an investigation that reportedly involved Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The decision, issued by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, centers on a federal inquiry into alleged heroin trafficking activities dating back to the 1990s.
The legal action was initiated in June 2023 by Nigerian journalist David Hundeyin and American citizen Aaron Greenspan. The pair filed a lawsuit under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), seeking access to documents that had been withheld by agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the State Department, and the Department of Justice.
Reacting to the court’s decision, David Hundeyin expressed his satisfaction in a post online. He stated, “I’ve dreamt of this day since 2022, and it’s a shame that I can’t do this with my @DavidHundeyin account. But long story short, Aaron Greenspan and I have won our FOIA lawsuit against the @FBI, @DEAHQ, @StateDept and @TheJusticeDept regarding @official Abates heroin trafficking records. THE UNREDACTED FILES WILL BE RELEASED!”
The ruling by Judge Beryl Howell mandates the release of unredacted records associated with the investigation, which is believed to have been part of a joint federal operation conducted in Northern Indiana and Northern Illinois during the 1990s.
Aaron Greenspan’s portion of the lawsuit sought access to criminal records concerning four individuals: Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Abiodun Agbele, Lee Andrew Edwards, and Mueez Abegboyega Akande. All four names have been previously linked in reports to a suspected heroin trafficking ring.
The release of these documents is expected to provide further clarity on the scope and nature of the investigation, which has been the subject of public speculation and legal scrutiny for many years. The case continues to generate significant interest both in Nigeria and internationally, as the documents may offer new insights into historical allegations tied to individuals in prominent political positions.
