NFF Owing Not Christian Chukwu

The Nigeria Football Federation has firmly denied social media claims that it owes late ex-Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu a debt of $128,000.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied allegations circulating on social media that it was indebted to the late Christian Chukwu, a former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, who passed away on Saturday.

The social media claims suggested that the football body owed Chukwu a sum of $128,000. Reacting to the reports, the NFF’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, dismissed the allegations as false and baseless.

“There is no record in the NFF of any outstanding indebtedness to ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu,” Dr. Sanusi stated firmly. “During the first term of the Board headed by Mr. Amaju Pinnick, a committee was set up to diligently peruse the papers of coaches who were being owed, even from previous NFF administrations.”

According to Sanusi, the committee’s mandate was to verify and settle all outstanding debts to coaches, ensuring no case was left unresolved. He confirmed that Chukwu, fondly referred to as “Chairman,” worked with the NFF between 2002 and 2005 before he was relieved of his duties after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Angola in a World Cup qualifier held in Kano.

“I am aware that ‘Chairman’ was in the employ of the NFF between 2002 and 2005, before he was relieved of the post following the 1-1 draw with Angola in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Kano in August 2005,” Sanusi added. “There is certainly no record of indebtedness to him in the NFF.”

He further challenged anyone with authentic documents proving the NFF owes Chukwu—or any national team coach from the past 20 years—to present such evidence.

“As a credible organization that is very much alive to its responsibilities, if we are confronted with any genuine document of indebtedness to any coach, we will offset the debt immediately,” Sanusi assured.

The NFF’s response comes as the nation mourns the passing of Christian Chukwu, a respected figure in Nigerian football history, both as a player and a coach. He captained Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and served the country in various coaching capacities over the decades.
