A Nigerian tenant has sparked massive outrage online after sharing a disturbing account of alleged rent fraud involving the caretaker of his apartment, who he claims has been pocketing millions of naira from unsuspecting tenants.

The tenant, who goes by the handle @Drweloveu on X (formerly Twitter), revealed that he and several others had been paying ₦1.3 million annually for their apartments, completely unaware that the landlord had only approved a rent of ₦500,000 per unit.

The shocking revelation reportedly came to light after the landlord made an unexpected visit to the property—a rare occurrence that tenants saw as an opportunity to appeal for a rent reduction. However, what they discovered left them stunned.

“Atanda, you won’t believe that the landlord was shocked to hear that we are paying ₦1.3M. He claims that what the caretaker sends to him is ₦500k each, and that is what he told him to collect from us,” the tenant wrote.

According to him, the landlord was visibly taken aback and promised to take swift action. He reportedly assured the tenants that going forward, they would only be required to pay the actual rent of ₦500,000.

But the situation has left the tenant seeking justice and accountability. He noted that over the last three years, the caretaker had allegedly been extorting an additional ₦800,000 annually from him—an amount that now totals ₦2.4 million.

In a post that has since gone viral, he asked a pressing question: “What I want to know now is: Can I take up a case of fraud against the caretaker so that he will refund me my balance of ₦800k for 3 years, which is ₦2.4M?”

The tweet quickly gained traction, drawing in thousands of reactions from outraged users who called for legal action and condemned the caretaker’s alleged actions.
