Polytechnic Student Dies During Karate Training

A final-year student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, simply known as John, sadly passed away during a karate training session held on the school campus.

He was studying for his Higher National Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies and was active in several extracurricular activities, including martial arts.

That Saturday morning, John left his off-campus lodge to attend his usual karate practice. However, as he entered the training area, he suddenly collapsed. His fellow students, alarmed by the incident, rushed him to a private hospital in Ikot Ekpene. Unfortunately, the hospital declined to admit him and instead referred them to the General Hospital in the same town.

Despite their growing concern, the students held onto hope as they transported him again. But upon arrival at the General Hospital, doctors examined John and confirmed the worst—he was already dead.

His friends were heartbroken and in shock. One student said, “Right now, I am not interested in men,” expressing her grief in the midst of the confusion. The news spread quickly among students, leaving many overwhelmed with disbelief. According to a student leader who was present, “Students rushed to the hospital, hoping the doctors were wrong.”

Struggling to accept the outcome, some of the students decided to take John’s body to a nearby church to seek a miracle through prayer. Despite their efforts, no change occurred. A spiritualist who also tried to revive him stated that John had “already transitioned into the spirit world,” which made the loss even harder for them to bear.

Eventually, the body was taken to the mortuary. Still, some students lingered around, not wanting to let go, silently hoping for a miracle.

The Head of Department, Inemesit Umoren, came to the hospital to speak with the grieving students. She helped them come to terms with the painful news before they began to disperse.

John’s parents were quickly informed of the incident.
