Chaos As ‘Imposed’ Lagos Speaker Is Accused Of Imposing LGA Candidate
By Benjamin Abioye

A stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ojokoro LCDA, Lagos State, turned chaotic after accusations surfaced against Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over the alleged imposition of a council chairmanship candidate.
The APC meeting, which took place on Monday at Ijaoye Street, began quietly around 4:00 p.m and followed Obasa’s return to relevance following claims that he was imposed as speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly
However, tensions rose when some party members stormed the venue in protest. The atmosphere quickly changed as demonstrators shouted angry chants like “Ole!” (meaning thief), “We can’t take it,” and “Obasa can’t control us from Agege.” Others questioned the imposed candidate’s identity, chanting “Who knows Sanusi?” and “We won’t allow a stranger rule us here.”
Speaking to the press after the disruption, one of the protest leaders, Olusegun Akinoso-Olawaye, explained that the purpose of the gathering was to endorse a chairmanship candidate who, according to him, had no connection to Ojokoro. He insisted that anyone vying for the chairmanship must live in the area, have contributed meaningfully to local party politics, and earned the trust of the people.
“We are here to reject imposition. All aspirants deserve a fair contest to prove their political relevance,” Akinoso-Olawaye declared.
He revealed that at least 18 individuals had shown interest in the chairmanship position, and many of their supporters were present at the protest.
Another protester, Bola Ojetayo, expressed frustration at how some leaders prioritize their own interests over the people’s wishes. She opposed bringing in an unfamiliar figure to lead the council, emphasizing that local leadership must come from within the community.
“We must not sell our seat to outsiders. A stranger cannot come and lead us in our own home,” Ojetayo said. “Leaders can’t sit elsewhere and decide for us. Someone in Agege shouldn’t determine Ojokoro’s leadership.”
In response to the unrest, former House of Representatives member and APC leader in Ojokoro, James Owolabi, urged the aggrieved members to remain calm and nonviolent. Acknowledging their frustrations, he encouraged them to continue engaging within the party’s structure.
“You have a voice in the party. Express yourselves peacefully without violence,” Owolabi advised.
Other prominent figures at the meeting included the current council chairman, Jelili Oseni, and former Lagos Assembly member, Ipoola Omisore.
