Dele Farotimi Slams Authorities Over Portable’s Arrest

The arrest of controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has sent the social media abuzz—not just because of his celebrity status, but due to the manner in which law enforcement officers handled the situation.

Adding fuel to the ongoing public outrage is respected human rights lawyer and public affairs analyst, Dele Farotimi, whose reaction has brought fresh legal and ethical scrutiny to the case.

Portable was arrested in Kwara State in a dramatic fashion captured on video and widely circulated online. The footage showed the singer being bundled away by security operatives in a move many described as excessive and humiliating. The incident, now trending across social media, has raised questions about the professionalism and legality of the police operation.

Reacting to the viral incident on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter), Farotimi made it clear that his concern had little to do with Portable’s personality or music, but everything to do with what he described as a disturbing abuse of power.

“I like neither Portable nor his music. I believe him to be a walking violation of basic decency,” Farotimi stated bluntly. However, he quickly shifted focus to what he sees as a growing culture of lawlessness within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.

“BUT everyone responsible for his abduction and current incarceration in Kwara State are practitioners in the administration of impunity,” the lawyer added, calling out what he believes is the state’s disregard for due process.

Meanwhile, Portable, who was arraigned on charges related to defamation was remanded in prison after failing to meet his bail conditions. The court has ordered his remand at the Correctional Centre, Ilorin, pending fulfillment of the terms.
