Ayodele Fayose says he will oppose Atiku’s 2027 bid, insisting the next president should be from the South after Tinubu, blaming the agitation to return the presidency to the North for the ongoing crisis in the PDP.

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has made it clear that he will not support Atiku Abubakar if he decides to contest for president again in 2027.

Fayose explained that the internal issues facing their political party started when its leaders decided to return power to the North. He said this decision was the root of the party’s problems.

While speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels TV, Fayose mentioned that he had openly opposed Atiku in 2023 because he believed it was the right thing to do for the country. According to him, “After eight years of a Northerner, it is the turn of a Southerner, which could involve someone from the East, South West, or South South.”

He blamed those who allowed the North to contest the 2022 primaries for the issues the party is facing. Fayose stressed the need for fairness in power rotation, saying, “You don’t have to like a Nyesom Wike or a Peter Obi, but there should be an unwritten, respected gentleman’s understanding of powershift.”

He also admitted his strong opposition to Atiku, saying, “I said it publicly that I worked against Atiku, and I am saying for the second time, if Atiku comes again, I will work against him. It is time to learn our lesson.” He added, “Don’t get it wrong. I worked against him (Atiku) 100 per cent. Nigeria is bigger than the PDP, APC.”

Fayose emphasized the importance of justice and responsibility in political parties. He said, “The party must be equitable, the party must be accountable. The party or parent that is irresponsible will produce irresponsible children, they will produce irresponsible situations, they will produce rebellion, they will produce anger.”

Looking to the future, he said that after President Bola Tinubu completes his tenure—if he gets a second term—leadership should return to the South. He stated, “After Asiwaju’s tenure, if God gives him a chance at a second term, let a Southerner come out. We as leaders at that time, I will be over 70 or about 70, I will come out straight that a Southerner can not be the President of Nigeria.”
