Father Daughter Akure First Lady Convoy

A heartbroken father in Akure has opened up after his 9-year-old daughter, Saratul Lawal, was killed during the visit of the First Lady to Akure.

A man in Akure has shared the heartbreaking story of how his young daughter, Saratul Lawal, lost her life in a tragic road accident during a high-profile visit to the city.

The incident reportedly happened as the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, was in town for an official event.

According to the father, the sad event took place when vehicles were moving to and from the airport to pick up the First Lady. He said he was by the roadside and saw the convoy passing but was not at the exact location where the accident occurred. “Yesterday, I was on the road. I stood by the road and saw them when they were going to the airport to carry the President’s wife. I saw the convoy when they were coming back too. But when the incident happened, I was not at that particular spot,” he explained.

He recounted being informed by people nearby that a vehicle had hit his daughter. “It did not happen in my presence. It was people who saw it that came to call me, saying one of my daughters had been killed on the road. By the time I rushed there, they had already taken her to the hospital,” he said.

Even though many bystanders believed the convoy was involved, the father said he couldn’t point fingers without being sure. “People were telling me to go to the government house to tell them their convoy killed my daughter. I said I can’t do that. What I did not see with my own eyes, I can’t say it was them or not. But many people, the Yoruba people, said they saw it—that it was the convoy.”

He identified the child as Saratul, a nine-year-old who studied at an Islamic school in Shasha, Akure. Some earlier accounts had claimed she was seven. “Her name was Saratul. She was nine years old,” he said. “Me, I fear God. All of us will die one day. So I won’t lie. It’s the people around the police station, those opposite the station, that saw how the vehicle killed her.”

There were earlier reports (Not GWG.ng) that a Hilux in the First Lady’s convoy may have hit the girl. The First Lady was in the area for the launch of the “Renewed Hope Initiative,” a project designed to support nurses and midwives with tools for their work.

However, the Ondo State Police Command issued a statement dismissing the claims. According to the police, their findings and witness testimonies point to a hit-and-run driver in a white Lexus without a number plate as the real cause of the tragedy. The police stated clearly that no car in the First Lady’s convoy was responsible.
