Obi Education Convoy Boy

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has promised to fund the education of Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the young boy who made headlines during the 2023 campaign when he stood in front of Obi’s convoy in Lagos.

Recently, Quadri Alabi gained attention again when it was revealed that he had been wrongly accused and held at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility in Lagos apparently as a consequence for his support for Peter Obi. He was finally released this week.

On April 18, 2025, Obi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude to Quadri Alabi’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, and everyone involved in securing his release. Obi also praised Quadri for his strong desire to return to school and continue his education, which had been interrupted by his detention.

Obi mentioned that after speaking with Quadri Alabi and seeing how passionate he was about learning, he decided to sponsor his education. “Today, I had the opportunity to meet with Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the young boy whose story moved us all. After enduring unjust and illegal incarceration, he is finally free, and I am very grateful to the lawyers led by @inibeheeffiong, who fought for his release and also @DeleFarotim and Ms Hassana Nurudeen, whose constant intervention was instrumental in securing justice for the young lad.”

“I listened to Quadri today, and one thing stood out clearly: his unwavering desire for education. Despite all he has been through, his only dream is to return to school and complete his education, and I will make sure he gets it,” Obi added. “His determination is not just inspiring; it is a call to action, and I am committed to ensuring that he gets the education he desires and deserves.”

The former Governor of Anambra also emphasized that those responsible for Quadri’s illegal detention should be held accountable. He insisted that such wrongful actions must not go unpunished for justice and fairness to prevail in Nigeria. “In addition, we must not stop at his release. Those responsible for his illegal incarceration must be held accountable. As we strive to build a Nigeria where fairness and integrity prevail, we cannot afford to allow such acts of criminality to go unpunished.”

Obi concluded by thanking the lawyers and all those who stood up for justice. “Together, we will build a Nigeria where education, freedom, rule of law, equity, and justice, along with care and protection for the less privileged, will be the foundation of our democracy. A new Nigeria is possible,” he said.
