PDP Governors In Office Who Defected To APC (Full List)
By Benjamin Abioye

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s defection from PDP to APC highlights a key political shift, as he joins the list of sitting governors who’ve crossed over from PDP to APC in recent years.
In a major political shake-up in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has made the surprising decision to switch allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection is part of a growing trend where sitting governors, who were once firmly entrenched in the PDP, have begun to make the bold move to the ruling APC mid-term.
Delta State, which has long been a PDP stronghold since 1999, has been rocked by Oborevwori’s departure. His exit represents more than just a personal political shift—it is a significant blow to the PDP, which has dominated the state’s political landscape for decades. This move has sent shockwaves throughout the state and underscores the changing political dynamics within the region.
Oborevwori’s defection is not an isolated incident. In recent years, several governors have made the switch from the PDP to the APC, driven by various factors such as dissatisfaction with their former party’s leadership, the desire for better alignment with the federal government, or to secure more federal support for development projects in their states.
Notably, Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State made his move to the APC in 2020, citing the marginalization of the Southeast region by the PDP. Similarly, Ben Ayade of Cross River State defected in 2021, emphasizing his desire to align with the federal government in order to bring more infrastructure development to his state.
In 2021, Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State left the PDP, following months of political turbulence in the state. His defection was seen as a strategic move to secure his political future and maintain stability in Zamfara. Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, has also shown fluid political affiliations, having initially defected to the APC before returning to the PDP. He has recently been linked to a potential return to the APC, highlighting the unpredictable nature of his political stance.
Another key defection occurred in 2014 when Aliyu Wamakko, former governor of Sokoto State, joined the APC. His decision, along with that of Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State, was a pivotal moment in Nigerian politics, helping to solidify the APC’s presence and influence across the country. Their defections played a crucial role in shifting the political landscape in Sokoto, Kwara, and beyond.
The growing number of defections to the APC shows that even the once-stronghold states of the PDP are no longer safe from the shifting tides of Nigerian politics. As more governors choose to align with the APC, it is clear that the party’s influence is steadily expanding, and political observers are watching closely as the 2027 general elections approach. Oborevwori’s defection signals that no political bastion is beyond the reach of change, and the PDP’s grip on several states may no longer be as strong as it once was.
