Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to the defection of former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the state’s incumbent Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that Nigerians should shift focus from party politics to the worsening economic situation in the country.

GWG.ng reports that Okowa, who was Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, officially joined the ruling APC alongside Governor Oborevwori and other PDP leaders in Delta State—a move that has sent the Nigeria political system on frenzy.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Friday evening, Atiku said he had received several inquiries about how he felt regarding the high-profile defections. He emphasized that in a democracy, individuals are free to align with any political party of their choice.

“I respect the rights of those who have chosen to leave,” Atiku stated. “But let us not lose sight of the bigger issue—Nigerians are suffering under the current administration.”

He argued that the focus should not be on political affiliations, but rather on the deepening hardship across the country, fueled by economic mismanagement under President Bola Tinubu’s government.

“Our economy is in crisis, inflation is at an all-time high, and many of our young people are hopeless about their future,” Atiku said. “While some leaders are jumping ship, the government is using political distractions to mask its failures.”

He urged Nigerians to unite beyond party, ethnic, or religious lines and concentrate on rescuing the country from what he described as poor leadership and failed governance.

According to Atiku, the country’s future depends on citizens who are ready to demand accountability and push for meaningful change, rather than getting carried away by political defections.
