MTN Cyberattack Customer Data

MTN has revealed it was hit by a cyberattack affecting customer data in some regions, though it confirmed its core networks and financial systems are still safe.

MTN Group, the largest mobile network operator in Africa, has confirmed that it experienced a cybersecurity breach which led to the exposure of some customer information in certain countries. However, the company assured the public that its main systems, such as billing, financial services, and core networks, were not affected and remain secure.

An unknown party claimed to have gained access to parts of MTN’s internal systems. While investigations are still ongoing, MTN emphasized that there is currently no evidence showing that customers’ accounts or digital wallets were directly affected.

The company said, “No evidence of compromise to any of our critical infrastructure, core MTN platforms, or services,” adding that its “core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational.”

The telecom company, which has about 280 million customers across 19 countries, has reported the incident to the South African Police Service and a special crime unit. It is also working with authorities in the affected areas to support investigations and meet local legal obligations.

“We have informed the relevant country authorities and will continue to update them on an ongoing basis while working closely with them and law enforcement agencies to support their investigations,” the company stated.

MTN has begun notifying customers whose data may have been impacted, as required by the laws of each country. The company is also advising all customers to protect their personal information. Suggested safety measures include adding fraud alerts to credit reports, keeping apps updated, using strong and unique passwords, and being cautious of unsolicited messages with suspicious links.

In addition, MTN warned users not to share private details such as passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords through phone calls, texts, or emails. The company also recommends enabling multi-factor authentication wherever it is available to enhance account security.
