Nigerian Actors Who Are Lecturers

Nigerian actors who are also lecturers, such as Peter Fatomilola, Kola Oyewo, and Sam Dede, combine their passion for acting with shaping young minds in universities.

There was a time when acting in Nigeria was seen as an unserious profession, but that view has changed over the years. Today, Nollywood boasts not only stars but also lecturers, scholars, and highly accomplished individuals who combine intellectual prowess with their artistry. Several of these actors are now lecturers, sharing their knowledge and inspiring the next generation of performers in universities.

Here are eight Nigerian actors who also teach at universities:

1. Peter Fatomilola
Peter Fatomilola, born on January 16, 1946, in Ifisin-Ekiti, Ekiti State, is an accomplished actor and academic. He studied at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a degree in Theatre Arts in 1978. Fatomilola began his acting career in 1967 under the guidance of renowned dramatist Professor Ola Rotimi. He is now a member of the academic staff at Obafemi Awolowo University.

2. Doyin Hassan
Doyin Hassan is a Full-Time Professor of International Business Management at Conestoga College in Ontario, Canada. Before moving to Canada in 2018, Hassan taught at Lagos State University for over 14 years. His academic background includes a PhD in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Marketing/Business Administration. He started his acting career in 1985 and later transitioned to Christian Gospel drama.

3. Kola Oyewo
Kola Oyewo, born on March 27, 1946, is a veteran actor, dramatist, and scholar. He earned a certificate in dramatic arts from Obafemi Awolowo University and later a Ph.D. in drama from the University of Ibadan. Oyewo served as a senior lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University before retiring in 2011. He later worked at Redeemer’s University and is currently a lecturer at Elizade University in Ondo State.

4. Sola Fosudo
Born in 1958, Sola Fosudo is a Nigerian dramatist, scholar, film actor, and director. He holds a Master of Arts degree in drama from the University of Ibadan and has been involved in directing several Nigerian films. Fosudo is the head of the Department of Theatre Arts at Lagos State University, where he also serves as the university’s Director of Information.

5. Hafiz Oyetoro
Afeez Oyetoro, known for his role as “Saka” in Nollywood, is also an academic. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Theatre Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan, respectively. Oyetoro holds a doctorate degree from the University of Ibadan and lectures in the Department of Theatre Art at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education.

6. Sam Dede
Samuel Dedetoku, popularly known as Sam Dede, is a renowned actor, director, and lecturer. He entered the Nollywood scene in 1995 and gained prominence for his role in Ijele. Dede, who won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2005, currently teaches acting at the University of Port Harcourt, where he mentors upcoming actors.

7. Tunji Sotimirin
Dr. Tunji Sotimirin is a performing artist, director, and lecturer at the University of Lagos, where he teaches in the Theatre Unit of the Department of Creative Arts. Sotimirin is also a storyteller, dancer, and broadcaster, making significant contributions to both the academic and creative arts communities.

8. Gbenga Windapo
Gbenga Windapo is a talented playwright, actor, and scriptwriter who also works as a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education. His expertise in both stage and screen performances has earned him recognition in Nigerian theatre and academia.

These Nigerian actors, who are also lecturers, have shown that a career in entertainment can successfully go hand in hand with academic achievement. They continue to contribute to the growth of Nollywood while shaping the future of the entertainment industry through education.
