The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially announced that Tuesday, April 29, 2025, will mark the beginning of Dhul-Qadah 1446 AH.

The declaration followed confirmation from the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC) that the new crescent moon was not sighted anywhere across Nigeria on the evening of Sunday, April 27.

In accordance with Islamic tradition, when the moon is not sighted, the ongoing month — in this case, Shawwal 1446 AH — is completed with 30 days. Consequently, Monday, April 28, serves as the 30th and final day of Shawwal.

Dhul-Qadah, the eleventh month in the Islamic lunar calendar, is significant as it precedes Dhul-Hijjah, the month of Hajj and Eid al-Adha.

Muslims across Nigeria are therefore expected to commence the new month of Dhul-Qadah on Tuesday, in line with the Sultan’s announcement.

In another development, GWG.ng reports that The price of a 50kg bag of rice has dropped significantly to around N58,000 in parts of Nigeria, particularly in remote areas, according to a new report by S&P Global.

The drop follows a surge of rice imports from the Republic of Benin, fueled by India’s recent removal of export duties on parboiled rice, which has flooded regional markets and sent prices plummeting to near two-year lows.
