The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested embattled businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, following her return from the United Kingdom.

Achimugu, who was declared wanted by the EFCC in March over alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering, was picked up by operatives around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Achimugu arrest came barely 24 hours after a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, ordered her to report to the EFCC on Tuesday and appear before the court on Wednesday, April 30.

Confirming the development, her lawyer, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), criticised the anti-graft agency’s move, arguing that the arrest violated the spirit of the court’s directive.

“My client returned voluntarily from London in compliance with an undertaking made before the court, only to be arrested at the airport by the EFCC,” Ojukwu stated. “This is clearly a breach of her fundamental rights.”

He further revealed that Achimugu had commenced a hunger strike in protest, adding, “She is a prisoner of conscience.”

Meanwhile, a senior EFCC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, defended the arrest. According to the source, Achimugu’s arrest was justified given her previous evasion and the serious nature of the allegations.

“We had already declared her wanted. The court only directed that she should not be detained if she appeared. How were we supposed to know she would show up? Now that she has returned, we must ensure she appears before us,” the official explained.

As of press time, it remains unclear if the EFCC plans to release Achimugu ahead of her scheduled court appearance on Wednesday.
