An investigation by the National Universities Commission uncovered 100 fake professors across Nigerian universities, sparking concern over academic credibility.

Nigeria’s higher education system is currently under the spotlight as the National Universities Commission (NUC) has revealed that some universities are employing fake professors.

According to the commission, Bayero University, Kano has the highest number, with 20 out of the 100 identified fake professors. This means the university alone accounts for 20 percent of the total. Next on the list is Ekiti State University in Ado-Ekiti, which has 15 fake professors. Obafemi Awolowo University follows with 8 fake professors.

The University of Ibadan and the University of Ilorin each have 11 fake professors, making up 11 percent of the total. They both share the third position. Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka is in the fourth position with 10 fake professors.

Other universities with nine fake professors each include the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Federal University of Technology, Akure; and Federal University of Technology, Minna. These institutions occupy the fifth position.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, University of Port Harcourt, and University of Jos all have eight fake professors each, placing them in the sixth spot.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) follows in seventh place with five fake professors. Covenant University is the only private school listed, with four fake professors, ranking it eighth. Lastly, Usmanu Danfodio University has two fake professors, putting it at the bottom of the list.

Abubakar Rasheed, the executive secretary of the NUC, stated, “The fake professors’ details were posted on the commission’s website,” and explained that the NUC had sent the names to each university for confirmation.

He also advised vice-chancellors to appoint specific officers to review the list of professors at their universities before uploading any information to the commission’s platform. Rasheed emphasized, “The fight against fake professors is a collective responsibility,” and encouraged school leaders to maintain accurate records of their staff, students, and other key university components.
