Court Reinstatement Edo LG Chairman

The Edo State High Court has overturned the impeachment of Akoko-Edo LG chairman Taju Alade, declaring it illegal and ordering his immediate reinstatement.

An Edo State High Court in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, has nullified the impeachment of Taju Alade, the chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government.

The court, presided over by Justice B. A. Okoh, ruled that the removal of Alade from office was unlawful and therefore invalid.

In the judgment delivered on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the court ordered that Alade be reinstated immediately. Justice Okoh also directed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure the chairman’s safety as he resumes office.

The judge firmly stated that the court has the legal authority to handle the matter, despite previous claims from the state government suggesting it lacked jurisdiction.

In a separate but related development, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Director General of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Council, raised concerns after officials of the Edo State Development and Building Control Agency (ESDBCA) sealed off his hotel, Eterno Hotel, in Benin City.

The hotel, located on Aiguobasimwin Crescent in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), was closed down by the agency responsible for enforcing urban planning and building regulations. A notice labeled “29.425 ESDBCA” was posted on the hotel gate, indicating the enforcement action.

Reacting to the incident, Iduoriyekemwen said, “I was at home when my manager called to inform me that officials were sealing off the hotel. I asked to speak with the government agents, but they refused to take my calls. I rushed down to the hotel and asked them what law I had violated, but they simply said they were acting on government orders.”
