Fubara Wike Meet

In a move to resolve their political feud, suspended Rivers State Governor Fubara visited FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja, seeking a peaceful reconciliation.

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, recently met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as part of efforts to resolve the political crisis between them.

The meeting took place at Wike’s residence in Abuja and was seen as a key step toward reconciliation after months of conflict.

Fubara was reportedly accompanied to the meeting by several top political figures, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and former Ogun Governor Olusegun Osoba. When he arrived at Wike’s home, Fubara went straight into the living room and personally appealed to the minister.

The disagreement between the two leaders has been ongoing since Fubara assumed office in 2023 and has contributed to rising tensions in the state. An insider confirmed, “There was a meeting, and I can confirm that.” However, the source declined to say whether the meeting would result in ending the state of emergency in Rivers State, only adding, “That I can’t confirm, but all I know is that there was a meeting.”

This high-level meeting followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which came after increased instability, including threats by militants to attack oil facilities. The federal government had suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, appointing a Sole Administrator to lead the state during the emergency period.

According to Premium Times, a source revealed that the meeting at Wike’s residence was both formal and emotional. The source said Fubara was brought to the minister’s house on Friday, 18 April, by Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Governor Olusegun Osoba. The meeting reportedly continued into the early hours of Saturday, 19 April. During the visit, Fubara was said to have prostrated before Wike, held his legs, and repeatedly called him, “My Oga.”

The source stated, “Fubara was brought to the minister’s house on Friday, 18 April. He prostrated for Wike while holding his legs and calling him, ‘My Oga.’ He was in Wike’s house till the wee hours of Saturday, 19 April.”

The same source explained that while the full content of the discussion was not made public, Fubara was told to return to Rivers State and gather his loyalists, especially elders, to explain the true reasons behind his fallout with Wike.

When reached out for comments, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media to the FCT Minister, confirmed the meeting took place but said he couldn’t speak on what was discussed.

In a similar response, Fubara’s spokesperson, Nelson Chukwudi, directed inquiries to the Rivers State Commissioner for Information. However, the commissioner, Joseph Johnson, did not answer calls or respond to messages.
