In a major political shift in Enugu State, three lawmakers elected under the Labour Party (LP) have officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing Governor Peter Mbah’s performance and leadership as their motivation.

The defectors from Labour Party to the PDP included two members of the House of Representatives Rep. . Dennis Agbo (Igboeze North/Udenu) and Rep Chidi Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South) — as well as Hon Malachy Onyechi, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly representing Nsukka West.

The three former Labour lawmakers were formally received at the PDP Secretariat in Enugu by the state party chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, in the presence of other party stakeholders.

Speaking during the defection ceremony, Agbo declared that their exit from the Labour Party to the PDP marks the collapse of LP’s political structure in the Enugu North Senatorial District. He commended Governor Mbah’s governance style, calling it “bold, inclusive, and development-driven.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Obetta praised the governor’s strides in education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure, noting that these achievements inspired their decision to realign with the PDP and support Mbah’s re-election bid in 2027.

The defection is seen as a blow to the Labour Party’s standing in Enugu, particularly in areas where the party had gained significant ground during the last general election.
