In a bold display at the ongoing women empowerment programme at the EUI Centre in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, scores of women staged a walkout on Mrs Theresa Ibas, the wife of the Sole Administrator of the state who they described as a stranger to them.

The protest, captured in a now-viral video circulating across social media platforms, showed the women exiting the venue en masse while voicing support for the embattled Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Their outcry comes amid lingering political tension in the state following President Bola Tinubu’s controversial suspension of Governor Fubara months ago, and the appointment of retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as interim administrator for a six-month period.

The federal government had cited escalating violence and explosions in the state as justification for its intervention and the declaration of a state of emergency.

However, critics argue that the decision is deeply rooted in the ongoing political feud between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Wike, during a recent media chat, openly admitted to supporting moves to impeach Fubara, but claimed that President Tinubu intervened by opting to suspend the governor instead, in order to quell the crisis.

The walkout by Rivers women is being interpreted by many as a rejection of federal interference in state affairs and a show of solidarity with Governor Fubara, whose popularity appears to be growing among grassroots supporters.

As of press time, there has been no official statement from the presidency or the office of the First Lady regarding the incident.
